NHIA DG: 15 Percent Health Tax Is False
Prof. Mohammed Sambo, the Director-General of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), has debunked widespread belief that the controversial 15 percent health tax is true while cautioning against the spread of false information.
In May, President Buhari signed the NHIA Bill into law, which made health insurance mandatory for all legal residents in Nigeria and expanded its coverage to over 83 million poor and vulnerable people.

Ever since the president assented to the bill, there has been a public outcry against a section in the Act where every worker would allegedly part with 15 percent of his or her salary as health tax.
As he addressed journalists at the 16th yearly Scientific Conference and All Fellows Congress of the National Post Medical College of Nigeria in Lagos, Prof. Sambo stated that in the Act, there was no mention of 15 percent of a worker’s salary to be used as health tax, and urged for every Nigerian to peruse the NHIA Act 2022 meticulously.
