Dangote Begins Awareness Campaign Against Anthrax in Host Communities
Dangote Cement Plc. has commenced awareness campaigns in all its catchment areas in the country in order to support efforts of the Federal Government at checking the spread of all forms of diseases, particularly, the spread of anthrax.
The awareness campaign which was kick-started in the four catchment communities of Dangote Cement was carried out at the various Dangote plants among them Oyo, Iwaa, Apata, and Obajana
One of the sensitization programmes which targeted butchers, meat sellers, as well as the different ethnic groups in communities around the Obajana cement plant was well attended.
Welcoming participants to the event, the General Manager (GM), Community Affairs/Special Duties, Dangote Cement, Obajana Plant, Ademola Adeyemi, noted that the event demonstrated the concept of good neighborliness and information sharing for the betterment of all.

The GM, Community Affairs/Special Duties, therefore enjoined participants to endeavor to share the information they received during the sensitisation with others, until it got to everybody in the Obajana community.
Also speaking at the occasion, the representative of the Dangote Cement Plc, Dr. Akinola Adewale explained that, “anthrax is caused by a spore-forming bacterium-Bacillius anthracis, which primarily affects animals such as cattle, sheep, and goats, and can contracted by humans who come in contact with infected animals or their products.”
Another member of the medical team, Dr Olufemi Adebayo who advised participants that sick animals be quarantined also called on livestock owners to report suspicious illnesses or deaths to the relevant authorities.
Responding, the Bajana of Obajana, Oba (Dr.) Idowu Isenibi admonished meat sellers and butchers to take the warning that anthrax was real, very seriously to save the lives of their livestock and that of humans.
