World Polio Day: Kano Reinforces Commitment to Immunisation

The Kano State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring all eligible children receive immunisations through targeted programmes while improving healthcare service delivery in the state.

The Commissioner, Dr. Abubakar Labaran Yusuf, have this reassurance during a briefing in Kano to commensurate the 2024 World Polio Day (WPD) held on 24th October 2024.

Dr. Abubakar also lauded efforts of the state governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, for his interventions and projects in the state’s health sector which culminated to keeping it polio free from wild polio virus (WPV). He however acknowledged the need to remain as accounts for 26% burden of poliovirus type 2.

“Governor Abba Yusuf has demonstrated this commitment through numerous initiatives, projects, and interventions in the health sector, including the inauguration of the State Taskforce Committee on Immunisation, chaired by Aminu Abdulsalam Gwarzo.

“Due to these efforts, Kano State has remained free of Wild Polio Virus (WPV) for over a decade. However, variant polio viruses continue to pose a challenge, with Kano accounting for 26% of the national burden of circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus type 2 (cVPV2) cases,” he said.

The commissioner recognised the dedication of Frontline health workers, traditional leaders, national and international development partners.

His words, “The dedication of vaccination teams, who risk their lives traveling house-to-house in challenging terrains, must be commended. Traditional leaders, state task force members, and local government area teams also play a crucial role in maintaining the state’s polio-free status, which was officially recognized on August 25, 2020.

“Gratitude also goes to the Kano Emirate Council, religious leaders, philanthropists, and developmental partners such as WHO, UNICEF, AFENET, SOLINA, eHealth Africa, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the Aliko Dangote Foundation, and many others for their continued support in our immunisation efforts.”
