Speaking at a press conference in Lagos, SOTLAN President Prof. Olugbenga Ogunmoyela emphasized the importance of reconstituting the governing council to ensure IPAN’s optimal functioning. He noted that the council’s dissolution in June 2023 has threatened the future of the profession, and its reconstitution is crucial for the institute to achieve self-funding and effectively regulate professional analysts and laboratory practice in Nigeria.
Ogunmoyela also stressed the need for the government to address the issue of unlicensed practitioners in the field, who cannot be recognized in a court of law, and encouraged qualified professionals to apply for registration with IPAN.
The call comes ahead of the 6th annual conference of public analysts, tagged “COPA 2024,” which will focus on “Optimizing Laboratory Analytics and Quality Assurance in the Present Economy.” The event will feature a laboratory fair and exhibition, a tertiary students’ competition, and a debate on the role of testing laboratories in Nigeria’s emerging economy.
