Reps Committee Vows to End Medical Tourism, Boost Healthcare Development
The House of Representatives Committee on Health Institutions has pledged to put an end to medical tourism and attract development in the health sector. Chairman Hon. Amos Magaji made this promise during an oversight visit to the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital (UATH) on Friday.
Magaji commended President Bola Tinubu for his declaration of a state of emergency on health and promised to revolutionize the sector by transitioning from analogue to digital administration. He applauded the hospital’s management for reflecting federal character in top management appointments.

The committee warned the hospital management to expect routine and unannounced visits to address public hospital challenges. Magaji emphasized that the committee, comprising over 40 experienced members, including medical personnel, is committed to improving medical services.
The chief medical director, Prof. Bissala Ekele, presented a multimedia showcase of the hospital’s activities, which the committee praised and promised to replicate nationwide. Ekele highlighted the hospital’s expansion from 350 to 500 beds and requested the committee’s assistance in securing MRI machines and improving power supply.
The committee inspected completed projects, including a new mental health building, renovated children’s ward, and pharmaceutical services department. They pledged to support the hospital’s development through constituency projects.
With this commitment, the Reps committee is poised to transform Nigeria’s healthcare landscape and put an end to medical tourism.”
