Ogun State Cracks Down on Environmental Polluters: 7 Companies Face Sanctions

In a bold move to protect the environment and public health, the Ogun State Government has vowed to take stern action against seven companies accused of rampant environmental pollution in Veepee Avenue, Sango Ota. The companies, including Purechem Manufacturing Ltd, Olympic Inks/Salient Industries, Ecomed Pharmaceuticals Ltd, Nigerian Distilleries Ltd, Industrial Mineral Products, Bhumee Inks Ltd and Classic Soap Industries Nigeria Ltd have been found guilty of recklessly discharging untreated effluents into the community, posing a significant threat to the health and wellbeing of residents which leads to enviromental pollution.

The shocking discovery was made during an investigation by the Ogun State Ministry of Environment, which revealed a trail of environmental destruction and neglect. The companies’ actions have been deemed unacceptable, and they will face severe sanctions for their environmental violations.

The investigation, conducted between June 14 and 19, 2024, exposed the companies’ blatant disregard for environmental regulations. The report recommends harsh penalties, including treating their effluents before discharge and channelling them into the agreed gorge within the community.

This crackdown comes on the heels of a similar incident in Ibafo, Ogun State, where residents and traders accused Country Kitchen restaurant of environmental pollution due to poor waste management, sparking fears of cholera outbreak.

The Ogun State Government has sent a strong message to environmental polluters: reckless disregard for the environment will no longer be tolerated. The fate of the seven companies now hangs in the balance as the Special Adviser to the Governor considers the report and recommendations.
