Nigeria’s Federal Government Urges Citizens to Practice Good Environmental Hygiene
As cholera cases and deaths rise, the Federal Government has advised Nigerians to prioritize personal environmental hygiene to prevent further spread. The Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Environment, Mahmud Kambari, made the plea ahead of the 2024 National Environmental Sanitation Day on June 28. The event aims to raise awareness about the importance of personal and environmental hygiene.

Kambari emphasized that good sanitation practices are crucial for controlling and preventing communicable diseases like cholera, which is spread through contaminated water or food due to poor hygiene. He stressed the need to end open defecation, wash hands before eating, and cook food thoroughly.
Partners, including the World Health Organization and Breakthrough Action Nigeria, echoed the importance of good hygiene practices. The WHO representative, Dr. Edwin Edeh, encouraged landlords to build toilets in their houses, while Jonathan Duku from Breakthrough Action Nigeria emphasized the need for a clean environment to prevent not only cholera but also Lassa fever.
The Etsu of Piwoyi community, Lazurus Bahago, commended the government and partners for the awareness campaign and pledged to work with his team to promote good environmental sanitation practices among residents.
