NGO Unveils Campaign Against Plastic Pollution

A Non-Governmental Organisation, Plastic Free Rainy Season Sensitization Initiative, has set out to join in the effort to combat plastic pollution in Nigeria.

Part of its plans is to carry out a three-month citizen-led initiative tagged the ‘Plafera Challenge’ aimed at adopting an everyday approach to reduce dependence on single-use plastics.

According to the convener, Ejike Nwankwo, who revealed this in a communiqué, the initiative was supported by WAICA Reinsurance as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility competition to inspire people to adopt small, everyday actions that keep single-use plastics out of landfills, reduce environmental pollution, and mitigate the risk of urban flooding.

“By participating in the Plafera Challenge, we will embrace simple, everyday actions that reduce our dependence on single-use plastics. While these actions may seem small individually, their collective impact is enormous. Together, we can keep single-use plastics out of landfills, prevent environmental pollution, and even mitigate the risk of urban flooding during the rainy season.

“The primary goal is to inspire people to adopt small, everyday actions that keep single-use plastics out of landfills, reduce environmental pollution, and mitigate the risk of urban flooding,” Nwankwo said.

He revealed that over 5,000 participants will together divert more than 2,180,000 single-use plastic items from landfills and oceans as “a remarkable opportunity to effect real change and demonstrate our commitment to sustainability.”

Nwankwo said the maiden challenge is scheduled to hold from July 1 to September 30, 2023, adding, “Let us lead the way in sustainability and take action to safeguard our environment. Together, we can reverse the tide of plastic pollution and build a cleaner, healthier Nigeria.”
