NAFDAC Shuts Down Illegal Alcohol Factory in Lagos, Arrests Manufacturer

Thel National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has successfully dismantled an illegal alcohol factory in Badagry, Lagos, as part of its efforts to eliminate fake and substandard products from the market.

According to a statement by NAFDAC’s resident media consultant, Sayo Akintola, the agency’s enforcement team, supported by the Nigerian Army’s 15 Field Engineering Regiment, discovered the illegal factory at No. 024, MTN Road, Badagry, belonging to Chinedu Okafor, a suspected illegal drinks manufacturer.

Okafor was arrested and handed over to NAFDAC officers at the Ports Inspection Directorate, Seme Border. Upon inspection, officers seized all equipment and materials used in the production of illicit drinks and shut down the illegal factory.

Investigations revealed that Okafor had been involved in criminal activities, compromising regulated alcohol drinks in the area. The suspect will be prosecuted.

NAFDAC emphasized the need for public vigilance and urged Nigerians to report suspicious activities to safeguard public health. The agency warned that consuming adulterated alcohol can lead to kidney and liver failure or even death.

To avoid counterfeit products, NAFDAC advised Nigerians to consider the “4 Ps” (pace, price, packaging, product) before buying alcoholic products. The agency assured that it would continue to minimize the level of counterfeit products nationwide, ensuring that people consume only healthy and safe products.

The public is urged to report any suspicious activity of illegal producers of adulterated products or similar activities to the nearest NAFDAC office nationwide.
