LUTH To Receive N200M From Lions Club For Cancer Treatment Support

As a result of being worried about the rising cases of cancer among children, the Lions Club District 0404B1 Nigeria is set to spend approximately N200 million to provide asset treatment support to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, LUTH, Idiaraba Lagos.

As she outlined her priority projects after her installation, Kema Ashibuogwu, the district governor of the Club, had identified childhood cancer as a menace and explained that if it was not tackled, it would create a devastating health issue among the growing children population.

Ashibuogwu had lamented that, despite rising cases of the disease among the children, it was only LUTH that has a dedicated ward facility in Nigeria where children with cancer are treated.

She then expressed her deep worries that, in spite of the threat of cancer increasing among children, not much is being done to create the necessary awareness as well as developing a policy initiative that will provide support specifically to families that have to contend with the challenges.

She explained that poor parents had to find a way to provide as much as N350,000 so as to carry out a diagnosis in South Africa before returning to start treatment at huge cost at LUTH.

She also regretted that Nigeria could not even boast of a single Flow Cytometer, (Cancer Detection Machine) which sells for about N64 million or even a Chemotherapy chair of N4 million.

During a media conference in Lagos, Ashibuogwu then disclosed that after they identified these challenges and how children die due to the absence of necessary treatment facilities, the Lions Club has decided to build a caregiver home at the cost of N100 million at LUTH.

In addition, she stated that the Club is sourcing funds in order to procure a Flow Cytomer as well as a Chemotherapy chair to support cancer treatment in the country.

She then called for other organisations and philanthropists to support the life-saving initiative as she explained that many children die due to cancer while society is not fully aware that children can suffer from cancer at a young age.
