Kidney Transplant To Commence at Yobe Varsity Hospital
According to Dr. Mohammed Gana, the Yobe State Commissioner of Health and Human Services, the Yobe State University Teaching Hospital (YSUTH), Damaturu, would soon commence kidney transplants.
In an interview with the LEADERSHIP in his office, Dr. Gana said that the hospital would be conducting the operation in partnership with the Urology and Nephrology Centre, Mansoura University, Egypt.
Dr. Gana stated that Governor Mai Mala Buni had decided to provide the kidney transplanting equipment to YSUTH since the hospital has the manpower to use them with good training.

He said the partnership would see doctors from the center visiting YSUTH to conduct kidney transplants and YSUTH doctors receiving advanced training in nephrology at the center in Egypt.
He said the ultimate management of renal impairment is kidney transplantation which is expensive and difficult to access, adding that all these are aimed at bringing down the cost of renal treatment and bringing succor to the people.
Dr. Gana said that kidney disease has a high prevalence in Yobe State, especially within the northern parts of the state, and expressed his optimism that research would unravel the mystery behind the upsurge of cases of renal disease in the state.
He added that dialysis is free at the hospital and that new dialysis units would soon be established in Gashua and Nguru, which are the two areas that are worst hit by the disease.
