cardiologist warns patients with hypertension

Hypertensive Patients Warned Not To Stop Their Medication

Dr. Olayinka Hassan, a consultant cardiologist, is warning hypertensive patients (those who have hypertension) against stopping their medication in order to prevent any dangerous health outcomes.

Dr. Hassan, who works at the General Hospital, Odan, Lagos Island, said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria Wednesday in Lagos.

He gave this warning in commemoration of the World Hypertension Day (WHD) that is commemorated annually on the 17th May. The theme for WHD 2022 was: “Measure Your Blood Pressure Accurately, Control It, Live Longer.”

Dr. Hassan explained that the abrupt stoppage of any medication that is used to treat high blood pressure could create risks to the patient’s health.

“Some people think hypertension is like malaria that goes once they take the drugs. The blood pressure can temporarily normalise but if you stop the drugs, after a while, it can come back and might result in heart attack, stroke or other life-threatening conditions.”
