Gas Plant Sealed Off After Posing As Threat To Community

In response to the ecological and health hazards caused to residents of the Agbor community, including Mary Mount College students and the surrounding environment, the Delta State Government has sealed off a gas plant by the name of HANDESKIA Oil and Gas Limited.

The company is situated no Malekwe Street, Boji Boji, Owa, in Ika North East Local Council of the state. Chief Godspower Asiuwhu, the Delta State Commissioner for Environment, gave the order during the weekend and warned the company that stiffer sanctions would be meted out should it try to unseal the premises.

Chief Asiuwhu also cautioned the management and members of staff of the affected gas plant to subsequently desist from causing havoc to residents of the host community as the firm’s activities had continued to pose environmental and health threats to the people, especially the students of Mary Mount College, Agbor.

The commissioner, who expressed his disgust over the unruly behaviour of some members of staff of the gas company, said that the state government would no longer disregard any attempt by the company to unseal the premises.

He stated that a task force would be set up to monitor the activities of the firm after it had been sealed off to ensure it did not return to business.

Victor Ebonka, the council chairman, lamented that despite the fact that the gas company had been sealed off twice, the management had gone back to unseal the premises.

He explained that since the firm’s activities were endangering the lives of residents, there was a need to seal off the gas company and put a stop to all its activities.
