Floods Unleash Devastation in Bauchi: Four Lives Lost, Thousands Displaced

A trail of destruction and despair has been left in the wake of devastating floods that have ravaged communities in Bauchi State, claiming four lives and displacing thousands. The Bauchi State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) has confirmed the grim toll, with Director General Mas’ud Aliyu painting a dire picture of the situation.

The floods have brought chaos to Shira, Giade, and Katagum Local Government Areas, with farmlands submerged, homes destroyed, and vital infrastructure damaged. The true extent of the devastation is still unfolding, but it’s clear that the floods have dealt a crushing blow to the affected communities.

In Giade, the floodwaters have spared lives but destroyed livelihoods, with farms, animals, and domestic assets swept away. In Shira, three lives have been lost, and homes lie in ruins. Katagum has suffered a similar fate, with one life lost and farmlands, houses, and roads destroyed.

Mas’ud said, “In Katagum, a road has been cut off on the way to Bulkachuwa, and another road from Azare to Jama’are. Similarly, two roads have collapsed: one from Azare to Giade and another from Shira to Azare, which may be cut off at any moment.”

The floods have also severed critical transportation links, leaving travelers stranded. A damaged bridge and collapsed roads have cut off access to vital areas, while thousands of hectares of farmland have been submerged, threatening food security.

The SEMA Director urged residents of the state living in waterways to vacate their houses, as there are more threats of flooding in many areas.

As the situation continues to deteriorate, SEMA is urging residents living in waterways to flee their homes immediately, warning of further flooding threats. The agency’s dire warning comes as the full extent of the damage becomes clear: thirty-five communities in Katagum Local Government Area alone have been affected, with one community, Sabon Gari, completely submerged.
