Federal Government Vows to Deploy Cholera Vaccines to Curb Outbreak

The Federal Government has assured that it will effectively deploy cholera vaccines provided by Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, to curb the ongoing outbreak in the country. This commitment was made by the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Pate, in response to a post by Gavi CEO, Dr. Sania Nishtar, on social media.

Despite a decline in the spread of the outbreak, the government is taking proactive measures to prevent further cases and deaths. As of July 15, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) recorded 3,623 suspected cholera cases and 103 deaths across 34 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

The minister expressed gratitude to Gavi for facilitating the vaccines and assured that they would be efficiently and effectively deployed. He also thanked President Tinubu for his leadership in setting up a multi-sector cabinet committee to support the national response to the outbreak.

The Federal Government is also accelerating efforts to improve water and sanitation situation in the country, which is critical in preventing the spread of cholera. The minister emphasized that the government would not relent in its efforts, as the situation can reverse if not properly managed.

Gavi has expressed its readiness to support Nigeria’s anti-cholera fight, with the CEO stating that the organization stands ready to work with partners to support the government’s efforts to contain the outbreak and protect those at highest risk.
