Concern As Maternal Mortality, Zero Dose Immunisation Grows In Kano
A Coalition of civil society groups – Partnership for Advocacy for Child and Family Health at Scale (PACFAH@Scale), has raised concern over increased cases of maternal mortality, poor immunization and weak implementation of basic health care services in Kano.
The coalition raised the concern during its recent visit to Kano state ministry of health to demand urgent intervention to rescue the state of health care system from total collapse.
The coalition includes representatives of Women in Media Communication Initiative (WIM); Medical Women Association of Nigeria (MWAN); Federation of Muslim Women Associations of Nigeria (FOMWAN); Accountability Mechanism for MNCH in Kano State (AMMKaS); Community Support and Development Initiative Nigeria (CSADI) and National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM).
The concern was as a result that 300,000 children were under zero immunization while maternal mortality increased by 1,025 per 100,000 deaths in Kano.
In a statement signed by representatives of the six groups in the coalition, advocated timely release of budgets for routine immunization, family planning, and related medical exigencies.

According to the release, “There was need to ensure timely release of routine immunization budget to achieve the 85 per cent target coverage and ensuring timely release of family planning budget to address the unmet need, which stands at 24.8 per cent (MICS Survey, 2021).
“Instituting transparency and accountability mechanisms through community involvement, especially on financial and budget information-related issues and Fast-tracking the implementation of the RMNCAH+N strategy to address the high maternal mortality in Kano State (MMR in Kano State: 1,025 per 100,000 live births, MICS Survey, 2021).
“Fast-tracking the implementations of the adopted and Costed Minimum Service Package (MSP) document and the consolidation of all PHC functions under Kano SPHCMB.”
The Commissioner for Health Dr. Abubakar Yusuf, expressed eagerness to collaborate closely with the coalition and extend his support to engage key health stakeholders to drive positive changes and ensure accessible and quality healthcare for all in the state.
The Commissioner emphasized that he has been actively seeking such insightful reports since assuming office and commended the coalition for their unwavering dedication in improved healthcare system in Kano.
