COAS Unveils Plans to Upgrade Army Reference Hospitals to Teaching Hospital Standards
The Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, has announced plans to upgrade the Army Reference Hospitals in Lagos, Kaduna, and Abuja to par with teaching hospitals. This move aims to provide the best medical care to soldiers and their families.
During the inauguration of an upgraded radio-diagnostic center and installation of a 1.5 Tesla Magnetic Resonance Imaging machine at the 44 Nigerian Army Reference Hospital Kaduna, Lagbaja emphasized the Nigerian Army’s commitment to providing top-notch medical care.
The upgraded facilities will enable the hospital to offer specialized surgeries and diagnostic investigations, setting a new standard for medical excellence.

Beyond upgrading reference hospitals, the Nigerian Army is also intervening in brigade medical centers to provide the next level of medical support to soldiers. Priority is being given to centers in hard-to-reach areas, with ongoing interventions in Makurdi, Lokoja, Ikeja, and Yola, and plans to expand to other parts of the country.
In addition to medical care, the COAS highlighted his administration’s focus on providing essential welfare support to troops, including accommodation upgrades and construction, water, power supply, good roads, and other vital services. This effort aims to motivate soldiers to give their best in serving the nation and combating security threats.
The upgraded facilities and initiatives were praised by the acting Commander, Army Medical Corps, Brig.-Gen. Samson Okoigi, and the Chief Medical Director of 44 NARHK, Col. Stephen Onuchukwu, who expressed gratitude for the COAS’s support and leadership.
The former Chief of Air Staff, retired Air Marshal Oladayo Amao, also inaugurated a renovated dining hall and a 1.8KM road at the Command Secondary School, Kaduna, a project he sponsored as a former student of the school.
