Bill Gates Reveals Nigeria as Largest Beneficiary of Foundation’s Aid in Africa
In an exclusive interview with journalists at the 2024 NutriVision Dialogue on Tuesday in Abuja, Bill Gates, co-chair of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, disclosed that Nigeria receives the highest amount of financial aid from the foundation in Africa. This investment is part of the foundation’s mission to reduce health inequality globally and eradicate diseases like measles, malaria, and polio.
With a population of over 200 million people, Nigeria is a critical focus area for the foundation, which has spent billions of dollars in the country. Gates expressed his satisfaction with the progress made in reducing child mortality rates but emphasized that more work needs to be done.

The foundation plans to increase its funding in the future, with a focus on strengthening primary healthcare systems. He also highlighted the impact of primary healthcare, stating that it offers the greatest return on investment.
In addition to healthcare, the foundation is also investing heavily in Nigeria’s agricultural sector, recognizing its potential to drive economic growth. Gates emphasized the importance of boosting agricultural productivity through access to high-yield seeds, fertilizers, and improved information systems for farmers.
The foundation is also supporting food fortification initiatives to enhance the nutritional quality of staple foods and reduce malnutrition. Furthermore, he stressed the significance of providing access to affordable foods like milk and eggs to combat malnutrition.
Since its inception in 2000, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has committed over $7 billion to support African countries and institutions in their efforts to address hunger, disease, gender inequality, and poverty. With its continued investment in Nigeria and other African countries, the foundation is poised to make a lasting impact on the continent.
