The President of the Society of Lifestyle Medicine of Nigeria (SOLONg), says the significance of sleep cannot be overemphasized, stressing that it is the pillar of lifestyle medicine for overall well-being on Friday in Lagos.

Adequate Sleep Is Necessary To Prevent Mental Illness

 

On Monday, Dr. Jibril Abdulmalik, a Consultant Psychiatrist, emphasised the need for people to have adequate sleep and sufficient rest in order to reduce the risk of mental health problems.

Dr. Abdulmalik, who is also the Founder of an NGO called the Asido Foundation, gave this advice during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.

He cautioned that a person having prolonged days of sleeplessness could indicate that there might be a mental health problem that needs to be checked.

He explained that poor sleep was a gateway to getting mental illness, further adding that depression, stress, a lack of happiness, sudden loss of interest and anxiety disorders were also other factors which could trigger mental illness.
