Abia State to Raise Nurses’ Retirement Age to 65

Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has announced plans to increase the retirement age for nurses in the state from 60 to 65 years. This move aims to revamp the health sector, a priority area for his administration.

During his monthly interactive session with newsmen at the Government House in Umuahia, Otti revealed that the government has already extended the retirement age for teachers to 65 years. He also announced plans to establish a state-of-the-art medical city, with a committee set up and a location identified. The project will be realized in collaboration with international medical missions, Extended Hands and Lifted Hands organizations.

Otti emphasized that the government is committed to the project, aiming to reverse medical tourism and make Abia a hub for quality healthcare. He also highlighted the state’s financial stability, operating without borrowing and exploring facilities with the African Development Bank and Islamic Development Bank Group.

Additionally, Otti shared achievements in various sectors, including agriculture, where the government has recovered concessioned plantations. He expressed gratitude to residents for their support and encouraged continued cooperation in building a new Abia.
